Sans faire de vagues… (2021)

Les requins sont massivement victimes du très lucratif commerce de leurs ailerons. On leur attribue depuis le Xème siècle un certain nombre de vertus miracles. Il a pourtant été largement démontré que cela tenait du mythe et qu’au contraire ils sont bioaccumulateurs et donc porteurs de fortes concentrations de métaux lourds. Comble de l’ironie, ils n’ont aucun goût.

L’œuvre est composée de trois sculptures de requins à taille réelle (blanc, marteau et renard) amputés de leurs ailerons. À chaque fois qu’elle émet un son, quelque part dans le monde, un squale est rejeté à la mer, mutilé, voué à une agonie de plusieurs jours.

Le phénomène est si massif que leur population globale a diminué de plus de 90% dans les zones exploitées. La disparition du plus grand prédateur de nos océans causerait pourtant de puissants déséquilibres dans les écosystèmes marins qui nous fournissent la majeure partie de notre oxygène.

Sans faire de vagues…, en utilisant l’étonnant pouvoir de suggestion du son, interroge ce bien étrange marché aux poissons.

Sharks are massively victims of the very profitable trade of their fins. Since the 10th century, they have been attributed a number of miraculous virtues. However, it has been widely demonstrated that it is a myth and that, on the contrary, they are bioaccumulators and therefore carry high levels of heavy metals. Ironically, they have no taste.

 The work consists of three life-size sculptures of sharks (white, hammerhead and fox) with their fins amputated. Each time it emits a sound, a shark is thrown back into the sea without its fins, destined to an agony of several days.

The phenomenon is so massive that shark numbers have decreased by more than 90% in the areas concerned. However, the disappearance of the greatest predator from our oceans would cause serious imbalances in the marine ecosystems that provide us with most of our oxygen. 

Sans faire de vagues…, using the astonishing power of suggestion of sound, questions this strange fish market.
